The Lord of the Rings. It’s a fiction, and the story is set in what is called “Middle Earth”. The Dark Lord, Sauron, seeks to rule Middle Earth, but was defeated in a battle ages before the actual story. His defeat left him shattered and crippled, and all his powers remained and embodied one golden ring. If he reclaims the Ring of Power he would return to his true form and try to take over Middle Earth again.
As a desperate attempt to destroy this ring - which would as a result completely destroy the Dark Lord - the races of elves, dwarves and men band together in a last stand to destroy the ring and thus completely destroy Sauron. But all their hopes and intentions seem almost hopeless; the Dark Lord is powerful and his armies countless, his dark servants/generals (known as wring wraiths) strike fear into the hearts of men and are hell bent on finding the ring for their master. What makes it interesting is that the duty of destroying the ring was left in the hands of Frodo, a hobbit - a race of beings who are small and peaceful and, at first glance, seem incapable of doing great things. Frodo must destroy the ring but the ring can only be destroyed by casting it into the fires of the volcano known as Mount Doom, which lies in the land of Mordor…which is also the domain of the Dark Lord. 
The story progresses through the trilogy and comes to its climax in the last book (The Return of the King). I don’t want to spill any more, so as to not spoil it for you, should you decide to read it. But I assure you it is a beautifully written book and priceless piece of literature. It may start of slow (as do most books) but only to set the stage for a story more grand than you can ever imagine. I highly recommend this book to anyone.
